Our Abrasive Wheels - Principles and Practice course delivers a minimum of 7 hours of classroom and practical based instruction and assessment for all operators, managers and supervisors, who as part of their working duties select, mount, specify or use abrasive wheels.
The aim of the course is to enable candidates to gain the knowledge and understanding to work safely, understand current legislation and promote awareness of the dangers and hazards of using abrasive wheels, and to offer practical steps to reduce workplace accidents and encourage workers to adopt a culture that results in a safer workplace. This course is delivered by an approved BAF (British Abrasive Federation) Instructor.
This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.
The BAF Abrasive Wheels Principles and Practice course is intended for those who operate, supervise or manage the use of abrasive wheels on angle grinders, cut off saws, bench grinders and bench top cut off saws.
There are no prerequisites for this course, although an understanding of abrasive wheels and the use of angle grinders, cut off saws, bench grinders and bench top cut off saws would be an advantage. Each candidate must provide their own suitable P.P.E which is detailed in our joining instructors.

AM Session:
- Legislation and Regulations: including HASWA 1974 and PUWER 98
- Overview of Health and Safety Legislation inc HASWA 99, PUWER 98, MHSWR 99, PPER 92
- Hazards, Risks and Risk Control Measures including Contact, Wheel Burst, Noise, Respiratory and HAVS Hazards
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Types of Abrasive Wheel Machines and their safe use.
- Resin & Vitrified Bonded Abrasive Wheel Selection, Identification and Inspection – Types 1, 27, 41 & 42 (including Non-Live Practical Exercise)
- Correct Use, Setting, Adjustment and Inspection of Flanges, Guards and Accessories
- Pre-Use Machine Safety Checks (including Non-Live Practical Exercise)
- How to Mount of Abrasive Wheels on Angle Grinders, Chop Saws, Disc Cutters, Bench and Pedestal Grinders (including Non-Live Practical Exercise)
- How to True, Dress and Balance Vitrified Abrasive Wheels on Bench and Pedestal Grinders (including Non-Live Practical Exercise)
PM Session:
- Practical instruction of PPE selection, pre-use inspection of grinding machine, abrasive wheel selection and inspection and correct mounting of abrasive wheels on a selection of abrasive wheel machines cutting and grinding a range of materials.
- Each delegate will be assessed on a given senario on the correct PPE selection, pre-use inspection of grinding machine, abrasive wheel selection and inspection and correct mounting of abrasive wheels.
Upon successful completion of this course each delegate will receive a Kentec E- Certificate of Training, valid for 3 years.
